At least two schools in the UK are testing the new equipment, which features cameras that attach to the clothing. The devices are designed to be constantly filming, but will only actually record the data when the teacher presses a button. It is hoped that the cameras will help combat `constant low level disruption` but they will also offer protection to the teachers themselves. Some people have complained that the introduction of cameras into schools will violate privacy laws, but the Information Commissioner`s Office has explained that as long as the the filming is `legitimate, proportionate and necessary,` it would not be contravening the data protection act. The use of cameras in schools is still a contentious issue - legally it is unprecedented, and some lawyers have said that, if challenged, teachers would have to specify a specific need to be wearing the recording devices. Many public sector workers already use body worn cameras, most notably the police. In 2016 over 22,000 frontline Met officers were issued with Body Worn Video (BWV) equipment; and there are further plans to make the devices standard among the 32 boroughs in London. Many NHS staff, especially those working in A&E, already wear video recording equipment, and their use amongst parking wardens and crossing-patrol officers is becoming more common. Should I Go to University of Florida Andrew earned his bachelors degree in entomology and nematology from the University of Florida. If youre interested in attending the University of Florida, read on for his review: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Andrew: The University of Florida is located in the center of Gainesville, and has a more rural feel as you move away from town. The bus is the only option for public transportation. It is very good on campus, and runs well enough near campus; in truth, it is much easier to get around town with a car or bicycle. On campus, however, it is easier to get around on foot or bicycle due to the volume of student traffic. As with any city, Gainesville has good areas and bad areas. That being said, the main campus and midtown are generally very safe, well lit, and enjoy a reasonable police presence, even at night. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Andrew: The faculty and staff are world class, and second to none in terms of supportiveness for their students, availability, and teaching ability. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Andrew: Dorm life was good while I lived there, although room quality varied substantially from one building to the next. For instance, some dorms had central AC that was always ice cold, others had window mounted units, and some had no AC whatsoever. All of the dorms are on campus and very close to most classrooms. Additionally, dining options are plentiful on and near campus, especially near midtown. Every dorm in which I lived would arrange social activities for the students, especially first-years, including massive water balloon fights, a volleyball and wrestling mudpit, and even eating contests. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Andrew: I began as a Biology major before switching to Entomology Nematology. I found that I had a great passion for studying insects, which are very diverse in the state of Florida. Most majors are quite well supported; I never had any difficulty scheduling time to meet with advisors or teachers any time I needed. UF provides great resources available for students who need help studying. One of my friends was a Mechanical Engineering major and used these frequently. He had nothing but good things to say about the campus tutoring sessions. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Andrew: When I entered college, I was painfully shy, and yet I seemed to have no difficulties in meeting great people during my first year as a student. The friends I made during freshman year are still very good friends even to this day. Most students are not involved in Greek life; however, with the very large number of students attending UF, there is a sizable Greek population. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Andrew: With a reputation as being the Harvard of the South, the University of Florida attracts top companies for recruitment of its graduates. I have seen and attended numerous recruitment fairs at UF. Additionally, most students in my major were made aware of job openings through departmental email or other avenues. I can attest firsthand to how these resources helped me to secure highly desirable positions in my field. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Andrew: Study areas can sometimes be quite crowded due to the number of students at the university, especially during exams. Generally, though, the libraries and study areas are more than adequate in terms of space. Furthermore, the libraries are located close to the main area of campus, and are easy to access. Describe the surrounding town. Andrew: There is something for everyone in Gainesville. Because UF is located in central Florida, the surrounding towns are quite rural. There are numerous small natural preserves and parks near UF, most with great hiking trails and places to go camping, fishing, and hunting. One of my personal favorite places to go was Lake Wauburg, where there is a small beach. At the lake there are sailboats, kayaks, and paddle boats that can be taken out with a student ID. There is also a disk golf course, a climbing wall, and beach volleyball courts. There is a busy (but modestly sized) midtown and slightly larger downtown, with plenty of variety in terms of nightlife, music, and dining. Both of these areas are relatively close to campus, and are regularly frequented by students. Pool parties hosted by local radio stations are very common in the larger apartment complexes during the warmer months. For those who enjoy sports, the home games for the Florida Gators can be a great time; alumni, students, and fans come from miles around to tailgate and see the games! How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Andrew: The size of the student body is over 50,000 students. This is a very large number of people concentrated in a campus that is two miles square, with most classes concentrated in a cluster of buildings probably one square mile in area. Many of the general, lower-level courses had 200-300 students; in fact, I did take one class that had 500 students in a massive auditorium. Once I got through these, my upper-division classes were typically much smaller, especially in my entomology courses. I personally preferred these smaller classes, but I never felt that the professors of the larger classes were inaccessible or impersonal toward their students. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Andrew: The class I enjoyed the most was a course on insect classification. I still chuckle to think of how drastically this one class changed the course of my life. I was just out of my sophomore year and had just added entomology as a minor, thinking that it would help to beef up an application to medical school. Part of the course involved building a sizeable insect collection. Many students hated this part of the class because it was very time consuming and involved handling live insects; I ate it up. One day, as I was returning from a collecting trip, I found myself musing; thinking: I wish I could do this for the rest of my life. The next day I changed my major to entomology and never looked back. Now, some seven years later, I am pursuing a PhD studying the evolutionary biology and biomechanics of insects, and loving every minute of it. And yet despite how universal the experience of music is, there’s still a lot we don’t know about its effects on our bodies and minds. In fact,  the famed anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss once said  that music is “the supreme mystery of human knowledge.” Mysterious though it may be, scientists have discovered some interesting theories for the most common musical phenomena that we all experience. Whether it’s a commercial jingle or an overplayed radio hit, youve likely experienced having  songs stuck in your head. Scientists refer to this phenomenon as an earworm, and they don’t know all that much about it. For one,  its difficult to study: a song popping into your head can happen at random times. Moreover, it  often happens when your mind is zoned out and focused on a repetitive task. As you can imagine, these are not conditions that are easy to replicate in the laboratory! What we do know: several scientific studies have shown that one of the biggest contributing factors to experiencing an earworm is listening to a song over and over in a short amount of time. Other studies suggest that the shape of your brain plays a part. Ok, but how do you get that song OUT of your head? Other music may serve as a useful distraction, but one of the best cures  may be to give in and listen to the song again. 2.  Why does  my voice sound different on recordings? You’ve lost your phone (again), so you borrow a friend’s to call your own. It’s ringing did you leave it on silent? You let it ring through to your voicemail, when all of a sudden whose voice is that? Scientists believe  this phenomenon is because of  the mechanics of your  ear. When you speak, you hear your voice in addition to vibrations from your vocal cords passing through your throat and mouth into your inner ears. These vibrations are typically low frequency, which is what youre used to hearing. When you record your voice, you only hear the air-conducted sound   which is why you might think you sound higher-pitched. Test it yourself:  As youre  speaking out loud, curl both hands behind your outer ears and pull them forward. This will allow more air-conducted speech sounds into the ear, changing the volume and timbre. For the opposite effect, try plugging your ears to hear only the bone-conducted sounds. 3. Im bad at singing am  I tone deaf? Not everyone has the courage to sing in public. Some even fear that if they so much as open their mouth, everyone in the room will cover their ears and glass will shatter! But there’s a difference between being truly pitch-challenged and having an untrained singing voice. The inability to follow a tune or to differentiate between pitches is called  amusia, and researchers say it  occurs in about one out of every 20 people. While brain scans have revealed some differences between people with amusia and people without, it’s hard to say which came first. It’s possible amusia is wired into the brain at birth, but it’s just as likely that a lack of musical training is to blame. Are you really tone deaf?  Learn more and take the tone deaf test. 4.  Why are some people so bad at keeping rhythm? Similar to the inability to hold a tune, some people find keeping rhythm a challenge. But before you try to excuse yourself from the dance floor citing auditory arrhythmia, keep in mind that the actual scientific condition of being “beat deaf” is even rarer than amusia. In one study, researchers found only two people to be  truly rhythmically challenged, out of a group of hundreds. These beat deaf individuals had no trouble tapping out a beat in silence, but they couldnt synchornize their movements with sounds.  Scientists think this is due to an abnormality in brain connectivity and internal biological rhythms. Bad at rhythm? Here are some great tips  to improve from Easy Ear Training. 5.  Why do I get chills when listening to music? Ever felt chills while listening to a specific song? Youre not alone! Scientists call this  musical frisson. It’s little surprise to scientists that the experience involves dopamine release, the brains feel-good chemical. What did come as a surprise in this scientific study was that the emotional climax of a song was not actually the part responsible for musical frisson; it seems the anticipation of emotional release during the tension-building moments matters just as much as the eventual resolution in giving us that tingling feeling. There are many experiences that prove  the connection between music and memory. Listening to music can make you think of  a time or place, and it can  make you feel  nostalgic for a past relationship. Similarly, music  has been shown to deeply affect those with Alzheimers disease. Despite significant research into the subject, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the connection. Its challenging  to study, since music blends emotional experiences with text and meaning   and these are stored differently in the brain. Emotional experiences are encoded as an  episodic memory, and text and meaning is encoded as  semantic memory. This is why sometimes you remember the title or lyrics of a song, but not the tune, and other times you remember the tune, but the words never make it past the tip of your tongue! Many people rely so much  on music when exercising that when their  phone or iPod runs out of battery, they are completely thrown off and can’t even complete their workout. And many professional athletes rely on a particular playlist to pump them up. A recent scientific study  on workout music reveals several explanations for this phenomenon. First, music serves as an important distraction from physical pain and fatigue. Second, music can trigger  your “rhythm response”  your body cant help but move to the beat! Morrison and Ray Elliott, Wilson played on studio recording sessions for Them's second album Them Again (released January 1966). Visa regulations meant that he had to be replaced by stand-in drummers for initial live dates abroad, due to his youth. He was substituted by Dave Harvey upon leaving Them, and went on to work with Belfast groups 'Derek The Sounds' and 'Cheese'.In May 1968, he and bass professional Richard McCracken associated with guitarist Rory Gallagher in Taste, after the band's previous line-up had disbanded. The newly formed Taste moved permanently to London where they made a deal with the record label Polydor.In 1968, the band, along with Yes, opened for Cream at Cream's goodbye concerts, and consequently toured the US and Canada with the supergroup Blind Faith.In April 1969, Taste issued the first of their 2 studio albums, the self-titled Taste, with On the Boards following in 1970, the latter displaying the band's jazz influences. In 1970 they played as part of the Isle of Wight Festival, alongside Jimi Hendrix and The Who.Later the same year Taste travelled Europe but were disbanded by Gallagher, who decided to attempt a solo career, playing their last show on New Year's Eve in Belfast. Wilson and McCracken directly formed 'Stud' in early 1971, with Jim Cregan and John Weider.They delivered the Stud album in 1971 and September in 1972, maintaining the jazz-rock roots of On the Boards but failing to make a commercial and profitable impact.
